During this weeks seminars a couple of things came up that I want to mention:
First, Assessment is a powerful tool when used correctly under proper circumstances. I feel that too often assessment is simply a word tossed around haphazardly. Institutions like to discuss their assessment as if it alone makes for better education. I have been on both sides of the assessment paradigm. Many times the questions asked in surveys are simply pointless. It is a way to unduly elevate or criticize a particular area without a plan for addressing the issues presented. Administration uses those surveys to create statistics for board members who seldom dig below the surface for answers. During our course several examples of assessment strategies were discussed. Wonderful examples of success stories. I would like to visit these campuses and discuss with instructors and staff about the information that was not in the articles.
The second is ethics... The lines blur as the discussion of teacher and friend arise. A question about whether it was ethical to allow a professors wife to take one of his courses. I believe it is a difficult question. In some situations it may be unavoidable. However, where possible the appearance of impropriety should be avoided. A code of ethics should not be gray. Life is at times.
Winter is here.

Rex,
The problem with ethics is that there are multiple ways to think in an ethical manner it comes down to the framework you use and what you believe your responsibility and interests are in the issue at hand.
Discussion with people from the success stories would be a wonderful collaborative experience. The interesting thing would be to see how these successes address the issue through comparisons of what they spend in time and money to address the issue and then what is done with the information gathered in relation to future decisions.
Intersting thoughts Rex.
